NZ Breakers vs Perth Wildcats Game Preview:

Tom Abercrombie leads New Zealand in blocks and his rebounding allows them to use a smaller frontcourt. But he collected just two rebounds in Game 2 due to his proppy ankle.

Damian Martin is Perth's leading rebounder and is second in blocks. But after grabbing two boards in the first three minutes, Martin elevated for just three more the rest of the game after hurting his ankle, one being a crucial offensive board in the final 90 seconds.

Matt Knight received eight low-post touches and scored nine points on 4-of-5 field-goal shooting. Neither Gary Wilkinson or Alex Pledger could stop him – the Wildcats need to get Knight more of the ball.

In contrast, Wilkinson scored 10 points on jumpers against Nevill, beat Knight down the floor twice for lay-ups and scored twice on drives against the zone. Open shots dried up in the final quarter, however, and the Breakers failed to utilise Wilkinson in the post.

Nevill started the game with two jump-shots and an alley-oop. He missed an inside hook later in the first term and then didn’t see the ball inside until the third quarter. That resulted in a basket, while his only deep inside touch in the final term led to a dunk.

Alex Pledger picked up four fouls, three of which could have gone either way, but in his 11 minutes he scored three baskets diving to the hoop from the high post, while making all four of his free throws to be 15-of-16 in the playoffs.

In Game 1, New Zealand got 23 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and just three turnovers from Mika Vukona and Dillon Boucher. In Game 2 that dropped to six points, four rebounds, four assists and eight turnovers.

In contrast, Cam Tovey and Greg Hire gave Perth 12 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three turnovers. Odds are the team that gets the most assists and rebounds out of their "non-shooters” will prevail, while the Breakers need to get Vukona more low-post and pick-and-roll touches, à la Game 1.

Perth Wildcats v New Zealand Breakers - NBL 2012 Grand Final Game 2

In the first five minutes of the final quarter in Game 1, Perth had seven possessions where they fed the low post and/or penetrated to create open shots, scoring 16 points in the process. On their other three possessions they passed the ball around the perimeter before settling for three-pointers. They didn’t score a solitary point. In the final five minutes they had five perimeter-based possessions and three penetrations that didn’t result in a score. Their only basket came from Matt Knight slipping the on-ball screen to score from the low post.

If Game 2 is tight the Wildcats need to find Knight in the block, or use Knight, Jesse Wagstaff and Shawn Redhage to slip the on-ball for high-percentage shots, rather than settling for jumpers. Three of Bruton’s triples – including both in overtime – came after Cedric Jackson penetration. Bruton craftily lost his defender as they turned their head, catching the extra pass and delivering the dagger. Staying at home when Jackson drives and switching Dillon Boucher’s screens and hand-offs are an absolute must.

The way this game was discussed this week, you’d think it was the national championship and the second semifinal was the consolation game. That’s how big Kentucky vs. Louisville is — and now it’s elevated to the national stage. The on-court matchup features two teams with contrasting styles. The Wildcats like to get up and down, relying on the superior athleticism of their star-studded roster of underclassmen to overwhelm opponents in the open floor and around the rim.

The Cardinals excel on the defensive end, where their gritty guard play frustrates ballhandlers while 6-11 center Gorgui Dieng defends the paint. But it’s the coaching clash between Kentucky’s past (Rick Pitino) and present (John Calipari) that filled front pages and message boards in the lead-up to tonight’s game.

Pitino led the Wildcats to the 1996 national title in between a pair of NBA head coaching stints and leads his third team into the Final Four. Calipari, meanwhile, reached the 2008 final with Memphis, only to see his team squander a late lead and fall to Kansas in overtime. That trip, along with his 1996 appearance with Massachusetts, was later vacated. Last season, Calipari’s Wildcats lost to eventual national champion Connecticut in the title game.
